Director Hayao Miyazaki To Retire

Hayao Miyazaki is retiring, after winning an Oscar for Spirited Away in 2001. The animation studio for the 72-year-old announced the news Sunday at Venice Film Festival. Koju Hoshino said that Studio Ghibli’s president, Koju, confirmed Miyazaki would be making his final film, The Wind Rises. Director Miyazaki is also well-known for Princess Mononoke as well as Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and other films. Hoshino did not answer any questions regarding Miyazaki’s retirement but promised to provide more details next week during another press event in Tokyo.

He told them, “He wishes to bid you goodbye.” Miyazaki missed the Venice premiere, The Wind Rises. The 11th film by the director tells a story about an engineer who designed Japan’s World War II aircraft. Miyazaki is a respected director of animation who first rose to fame in 1970s through his anime work for television. He had retired following the 1997 release of Princess Mononoke. However, he returned and directed Spirited Away. Howl’s Moving Castle, released in 2004, was nominated as the best animated film Oscar. He was honored with the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for his lifetime achievements in 2005.

Biography Hayao Miyazaki ( ? ? ? Miyazaki Hayao was born on January 5, 1942 and is an animator, screenwriter, producer, manga artist, and film director from Japan. Miyazaki is an internationally acclaimed anime film director and animator. With Isao Takahata he co-founded Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki’s films have been compared with those of Walt Disney and Nick Park from the UK, as well as Robert Zemeckis.

Miyazaki is a Japanese animator who was born and raised in Bunkyo. In 1961, he began his career with Toei Animation. Miyazaki began his career as an in between artist for Gulliver’s Travels Beyond the Moon. He pitched ideas to the director that became the ending of the film. In 1979, he began directing his first film Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. He worked as an animator for the rest of the decade. In 1979, after the success of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke, he founded Studio Ghibli.

Miyazaki enjoyed commercial success and critical acclaim in Japan but he was little known to Western audiences until Miramax Films launched Princess Mononoke. Princess Mononoke, the first ever animated film to be awarded Picture of the Year by the Japanese Academy Awards, was the highest grossing film in Japan until Titanic was released in 1997. Miyazaki’s return to animation was Spirited Away. The film was the top-selling film in Japan, won Picture of the Year for the Japanese Academy Awards, and became the first anime to win the American Academy Awards.

Miyazaki films have many recurring themes. These include the human relationship with nature, technology, and maintaining a peace ethic. Many of Miyazaki’s films have strong female protagonists. While The Castle of Cagliostro (his first film) and Castle in the Sky (his second film), feature classic villains, Nausicaa or Princess Mononoke have antagonists who are morally ambiguous but still redeemable. The Secret World of Arrietty was released by Japan in July 2010 and the United States in Febraury 2012. The Wind Rises is Miyazaki’s new film. It was released in the United States on July 20, 2013, and it will also be available internationally.
